Exploring Ancestral Material Culture

creative work by Sylvan Thorncraft

Medieval Europe

Playing with the Society for Creative Anachronism has been a fantastic inspiration for my work. The level of skill, study, and craftsmanship displayed by people in this group always challenges me to hone my own craft in good ways. Almost everything I wear and many of the household objects that I use when attending events have been made by own hands. Most of my ancestral lineages thread through medieval Europe, so my studies of this subject have had a way of connecting the broad arc of history and my own peoples' more intimate lifeways during this period, an understanding that has been incredibly enriching for me.

If you're interested in the process of making, I share about many of the projects on my Thorn and Thread blog.
